Cape Breton raises profile in Singapore
A seafood company from Cape Breton has been in Singapore recently as part of a business delegation from the region. Led by Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC), the delegation was in south-east Asia to coincide with the arrival of the yacht Cape Breton Island – Nova Scotia’s Masterpiece which is taking part in the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race fleet.
Among the trade delegation participants, Louisbourg Seafoods was showcasing some of Cape Breton’s quality seafood at two special events: a business reception held at the official residence of the High Commissioner of Canada to Singapore; plus Canada Night at the Races, an annual event with a high quality buffet provided to over 200 guests in VIP viewing facilities at the local Turf Club.
“Singapore knows its seafood and must be among the most demanding markets for high quality product,” explained Lori Kennedy of Louisbourg Seafoods. “Feedback from businesses we’ve met so far and the guests at the events we’ve supported has been excellent. I am very confident about the pristine quality of our seafood.”
The High Commissioner of Canada to Singapore, His Excellency David Sevigny, paid tribute to Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC) for organizing the successful trade mission. He made his comments while attending the start of the next stage of the race to Qingdao in China from Marina at Keppel Bay in Singapore.
“The discussion we’ve had with Singaporean friends is that they had no idea of what was available in Atlantic Canada – and Cape Breton is a sort of flag ship for Atlantic Canada. So it’s been a wonderful experience for us in raising the Canadian profile and raising the profile of Cape Breton here in Singapore.”
The high profile visit, was further enhanced by the fact that Cape Breton Island had won the leg between Geraldton-Greenough Western Australia and Singapore. In the video below, Cape Breton crew member Elisa Jenkins explains her elation at winning the yellow pennant which is awarded and proudly flown by the winner of each leg.
Currently Cape Breton Island is in 5th place and is battling the seas off the coast of China. Fans and those who are curious can track the boats using the ‘Race Viewer’ on the Clipper Round the World website. Using an application that links each boat via GPS to Google maps, you can instantly access or replay the route of each boat from start to finish.
Islanders and those who are visiting Cape Breton this summer will have a chance to see the Clipper fleet as they are scheduled to arrive in Sydney between the 11th and 13th of June. At that time the crew will rest and the boats will be prepped for another leg which starts June 19th and will finish in Ireland. The race finishes in England July 17th 2010.
